McLaren lost this on the pit wall
Andrea Stella admitted afterwards they simply didn't expect everyone else to pit under the safety car. That miscalculation handed the race to Verstappen on a plate. Piastri had pole, led the early laps, and looked comfortable. But the 25-lap tire limit meant staying out under the safety car committed both McLarens to two additional stops instead of one. By the time the strategy played out, Verstappen was eight seconds clear and cruising. A textbook case of how one call can change a championship.
Verstappen smells blood
Max jumped Norris at turn 1 before the safety car reshuffled everything in his favour. McLaren's decision not to pit was baffling. Every other team came in. Verstappen led from the moment the stops shook out and never looked back. Norris stuck behind Antonelli for most of the race and only got past on the penultimate lap for fourth. Sainz on the podium for Williams was a nice story but the headline is clear: Verstappen is 12 points back with one race to go. He's done this before.
The 25-lap limit killed the strategy battle
Pirelli's mandated 25-lap tire life limit was supposed to ensure safety after the 2023 tire failures, but it effectively removed any strategic variety from the race. Everyone was forced into a two-stop, the only question was timing. McLaren gambled on different timing and lost catastrophically. Without that artificial constraint, the race might have offered more varied approaches. Instead we got a procession after the safety car period with the result essentially determined by lap 10.
Losail shouldn't be on the calendar
This circuit simply does not produce good racing. The tire limit restricted strategy, the track layout doesn't allow for proper wheel-to-wheel battles, and the facilities exist to serve a commercial deal rather than the sport. McLaren's blunder was the only talking point and that's a strategy discussion, not a racing one. Norris stuck behind Antonelli for 30 laps tells you everything about overtaking here. Even the sprint was forgettable. At least the championship is going to Abu Dhabi.
Championship tension was the only saving grace
Strip away the title fight context and this was a deeply boring race. But the stakes made every pit stop decision feel enormous. Watching Norris drop to fourth after the strategy error and knowing the championship gap was shrinking in real time was genuinely tense. Piastri recovering to second after McLaren's blunder showed good damage limitation. Sainz grabbing a podium for Williams was heartwarming. But Losail as a circuit contributes nothing to the spectacle.
