The underdog story F1 needed
Gasly had been dropped by Red Bull just a year earlier and demoted to what was basically the junior team. Most people assumed his top-level career was over. Then at Monza, a red flag and Hamilton's penalty opened the door and Gasly walked right through it. Holding off Sainz in the closing laps was genuinely nerve-wracking. When he crossed the line the emotion was incredible. Sainz second for McLaren, Stroll third for Racing Point – not a single usual frontrunner on the podium. Refreshing.
Pit lane procedures decided this race
The key moment was Hamilton's team allowing him to pit while the pit lane entry was closed under the red flag. That 10-second stop-go penalty destroyed his race and removed the overwhelming favorite. Without that procedural error, Hamilton almost certainly wins. It's a reminder that races aren't just won on track – the regulations and their enforcement shape results too. Gasly drove brilliantly to capitalize, holding off Sainz by just 0.4 seconds. But the story started on the pit wall.
GASLY!
GASLY WON AT MONZA. In an AlphaTauri. A year after being demoted. That's it. That's the review.
An Italian winner at Monza – almost perfect
As a Ferrari fan, watching Leclerc crash out at Parabolica was painful. But what followed was remarkable. Gasly winning for AlphaTauri – an Italian-based team, based at the famous Faenza factory in the heart of Motor Valley – at the Temple of Speed. It wasn't a Ferrari win, but it was close enough to feel special. The Tifosi would have been proud. Sainz pushed him hard but Gasly held on. A unique result at a track that means everything to Italian motorsport.
The race that statistics couldn't predict
Going into Monza 2020, Gasly winning for AlphaTauri would have been a 100-to-1 shot. But the red flag after Leclerc's crash reshuffled everything. Hamilton pitted when the pit lane was closed and got a stop-go penalty that dropped him out of contention. Suddenly the race was wide open, and Gasly delivered under immense pressure, holding off Sainz to the line. First AlphaTauri win. The team's first win since Vettel took victory for Toro Rosso at this same track in 2008. A statistical anomaly that actually happened.
