Finally, Jenson
Button had been waiting 113 races for this moment and it came in the most chaotic way possible. Wet conditions, key retirements including pole-sitter Räikkönen, and Jenson just kept his head while everyone around him was losing theirs. Pedro de la Rosa finished second for what turned out to be his only career podium – a nice touch to an already emotional race. Honda as a constructor hadn't won since 1967. Some things are worth the wait.
The one that made me cry
I'd been rooting for Button for years. Race after race, always the bridesmaid, never the bride. And then Hungary 2006 happened – rain, chaos, faster drivers dropping out – and suddenly there was Jenson in the lead with clear air ahead. Even then I was terrified something would go wrong. When he crossed the line I genuinely teared up. His 113th start, Honda's first win as a constructor since the 1960s. De la Rosa grabbing second was the cherry on top. Beautiful.
Wet Hungaroring delivers again
The Hungaroring is usually a procession in the dry, but add rain and it transforms. The 2006 race was a perfect example – changing conditions throughout kept everyone guessing on tire strategy. Räikkönen was quickest but his McLaren let him down. Button inherited the lead and managed the conditions beautifully for his long-awaited first win. Proof that the Hungaroring can produce great races when the weather cooperates.
About time, Jenson
Button finally won a race and it felt like the entire paddock exhaled. He'd been promising 'next year' for so long it became a punchline. The wet conditions helped – Button was always good in the rain – and Alonso couldn't match his pace. Not the most exciting race, but a genuinely satisfying result.
