Kimi at his absolute peak
Kimi from 17th to first. No drama, no celebrations, just ruthless overtaking for 53 laps. Peak Räikkönen.
A masterclass in race pace management
Starting P17, Räikkönen needed an average of roughly one overtake per three laps to reach the front by the finish. What made this drive exceptional wasn't just the speed – it was the consistency. He barely made a single error while pushing flat out for the entire race distance. The pass on Fisichella on the final lap for the win was the payoff, but it was the 52 laps of relentless precision before that which made it possible. Peak Räikkönen, peak McLaren.
Strategy meets talent
The 2005 regulations forced teams to use one set of tires for the whole race, which made Räikkönen's charge even more impressive. He had to manage his Michelins while overtaking car after car from 17th. The team got his fuel strategy exactly right to give him the pace window he needed in the closing stages. Fisichella led going into the final lap but Kimi had been saving just enough from his tires for one last push. Textbook execution.
Painful to watch as a Ferrari fan
This was the season Schumacher's dominance ended and Ferrari were nowhere. Watching Räikkönen slice through the field at Suzuka from 17th to win was impressive, no question. The pass on Fisichella on the last lap was sensational. I just wish it had been a red car doing it. Credit where it's due though – Kimi was untouchable that day. One of the greatest individual drives I've witnessed, even if it pained me.
